Sheikh ‘Iṣām al-Dīn al-Asfarāyīnī’s methodology in his marginal notes on Sharḥ al–Wiqāyah

Abstract

Sheikh ‘Iṣām al-Dīn al-Asfarāyīnī is considered to be one of the eminent scholars of 10^th century AH.  He was born in 873 / 879 AH and died about 945 AH. He lived in the Mamluk era, which is considered to be era of decline. He authored dozens of books in various Islamic fields including Tafsīr, Ḥadīth, Sīrah, Islamic Jurisprudence, Arabic Grammar, Morphology, Rhetoric, Prosody, Logic, Philosophy and Theology.            This article is divided into three parts. In the first part, we have discussed life of Sheikh ‘Iṣām, and in the second part, we have provided list of his works, and in the third and last part we have introduced his manuscript: “Ḥāshiyatu ‘Isām ‘Alā Sharḥ al-Wiqāyah” and discussed its subject, peculiarities, and style of the author.Key Words: عصام الدين، شرح الوقاية، الأسفراييني، الهداية، الفقه الحنفي
