Psychological and social conflict in the novel “Sallamaht al Qass” by Ali Ahmed Bakathir (An Analytical & Critical Study)

Abstract

Conflict is an artistic phenomenon, and one of the most important elements of the (modern) novel. It gives the life and movement to the story, leads the narrative ahead by development of events, adds the deeper meaning to the story, leads to an understanding of the psychological and social aspects of the story. Conflict is actually struggle between two opposing forces, an instinctive force; that always seeks to fulfill its desire, and another force that opposes it. In Psychological conflict a person’s feeling of bitterness, anger, sadness and anxiety are expressed through his thoughts ​​and feelings. Thus, it helps to reveal the hidden esoteric side of the human mind. As for the social conflict that occurs between the hero and the society around him.  The conflict in a literary work, helps in understanding the society through the understanding of the heroes. The novel expresses the hopes, concerns and problems of man, and is replete with various manifestations and types of conflicts that arise between man with himself and with others. This study deals with the psychological and social conflict in the novel by Ali Ahmed Bakathir. The first section is the psychological conflict, in which we discuss the character’s behavior and actions towards events and their development i.e. the conflict of the hero with himself (the conflict of sadness, anxiety, piety, hope and others) and the conflict of the central characters with themselves. In the second section, the social conflict related to social problems is discussed, while the third section digs out the temporal and spatial conflict. In the conclusion, mention the most important results that have been reached.
