Abstract

The age of twentieth century is a period of substantive variations in Muslim thought. Mawlana Syed Abu’l-Ala Mawdudi presented a holistic interpretation of the Islamic politico-religious thought. This interpretation was named by Mawlana Wadiduddin Khan as the political interpretation of the religion. Javed Ahmed Ghamidi borrowed this thought from him. This led to key changes in the concepts of Khilafah, Jihad and other notions. But Ghamidi’s thought has passed thorough evolutionary processes. A study of his writings in chronological order reveals that in his beginning stage, he was of the view that the establishment of an Islamic state is obligatory duty upon the Muslims. The persons who do not obey the commands of God do not deserve any authority and power on the earth. Those who do not implement the commands of shariah commit the Kufr. These are some views of Ghamidi’s beginning thought, but his modern thought substantively differs from his previous. In a column written by him on January 22, 2015, he says that it is baseless to think that a state also has a religion and there is a need to Islamize it through an objective resolution and that it must be constitutionally bound to not make any law repugnant to the Quran and Sunnah. He further says that it can be the dream of every person that countries in which Muslims are in majority should unite under a single rule and we can also strive to achieve this goal but this is not the directive of the Islamic Shariah which today Muslims are guilty of disregarding. In this article an attempt has been made to study Javed Ahmad Ghamidi’s thought through its evolutionary processes. Its purpose is to clarify that his thought has not been static rather it adopted evolution according to the external circumstances. The methodology adopted in this article is narrative and analytical.
